In early 1967 Sharon and Roman had rented 1038 Palisades Beach Road in Santa Monica. It is a Norman-style Mansion overlooking Santa Monica Beach. It had been built in 1929 by architect Paul R. Crawley for the actress Norma Talmadege. Here's what Roman said about the house in his 1984 Biography "Roman by Polanski": "I would get daily calls from Sharon, who was house hunting in L.A. Before long she told me she'd found a marvelous place- a bit expensive, she said, but she asked if she could go ahead and sign the lease? I saw why she had fallen in love with the house when I showed up. It was one of those old Santa Monica mansions on Ocean Front, just off of Pacific Coast Highway with a walled, tree-shaded garden, an ornamental pond, and a Swimming Pool. It had cavernous closets, masses of Audubon and Victorian Flower prints, an enormous curving staircase down which Gloria Swanson might have made an entrance at any moment, and a somewhat masculine master bedroom lined with acres of somber paneling. Like many Hollywood houses I came to know so well, it closely resembled a film set from the 30's. Although my per diem was substantial, the rent was a wild extravagance. I didn't need such a large house nor was it really my style. I'd have much preferred something more modern, but at least this caricature of a Hollywood Mansion was a good laugh among friends. Besides, Sharon's delight in it was all that mattered." They stayed here while Roman wrote the script for "Rosemary's Baby" and Sharon filmed "Valley of the Dolls". After their lease was up in early 1968 they stayed at the Sunset Marques, but due to Sharon's distaste for the decor there, they moved into the Chateau Marmot.
